Timex M79 Automatic Watch Review

Timex M79 Automatic Watch Review

In 2019, Timex reinvented its vintage Q model for the collectors. It was wildly popular among watch enthusiasts, and this is why Timex is back with another reinvention, this time with the M79 model. Timex released their Timex M79 Batman Automatic Watch on February 12th, 2020, and the feedback was quite positive from the targeted populace.

Moreover, the M in the title stands for mechanical. Yes, you read it right. This watch is mechanical and stays loyal to the original inspiration, the 1970s Q Timex. For Timex owners we recommend our 18mm leather watch straps, 20mm leather watch straps, 22mm leather watch straps24mm leather watch straps and 26mm leather watch straps.

Specifications of Timex M79

Timex Watch Case

The polished stainless steel case is 40mm in diameter and comes in a round shape. This may be a smaller size as compared to the modern 44mm watches, but it sits perfectly around the wrist. The offered thickness is 14.5mm, and the overall shape of the case is perfect for medium-sized wrists.

However, the batman bezel on top has a ribbed outer edge, which makes the watch look bigger than its actual size. Timex M79 is water-resistant up to 50 meters. This is not a diver watch, so 50 meters is more than enough to protect the inner movement from splashes and spills.

The top crystal is acrylic instead of the traditional sapphire. This means that while the top crystal offers a lower glare than the sapphire crystals, it is more vulnerable to scratches as well. This is a drawback of Timex M79, and the community heavily criticized the acrylic crystal.

The Timex Dial

One of the most noticeable things about this watch is the crisp and sharp black and white dial. The black and white color scheme increases the contrast and enhances the overall readability of the timepiece. The words "Timex" and "Automatic" are printed on top and bottom, respectively.

The fine hashes mark the single seconds around the dial, whereas, white lume dots mark the 5-minute positions. There are long hashes at the six o’clock and nine o’clock positions, and a broader arrow marks the twelve o’clock position.

The dial also features a simple yet beautiful "day and date" window at three o'clock position. The white border around the day and date window makes it easily readable.

The Timex Batman Bezel

The blue and black unidirectional bezel is also known as the "Batman Bezel." Numerals mark the ten-minute positions around the bezel, and small hashes mark the one-minute positions. Timex uses longer hashes to mark the 5-minute positions around the bezel. At a cursory glance, the black and blue color scheme reminds one of the classic Batman suits from the early 70s.

The Miyota Movement

Timex uses the in-house automatic Miyota movement to power the M79. This movement does not need any winding, after it gets going, to work properly and keeps accurate time under intense pressure as well.

With 21,600 beats per hour, the Miyota movement is one of the best automatic movements in the market. Since this is not a diver watch, the case back allows you to see the magnificent Miyota at work.

The movement offers six ticks per second, and this is why the second hand appears smoother as it goes around the dial. This 21-jewel Miyota movement offers a power reserve of 40 hours. This is another drawback of this watch. However, since you can purchase this watch for half the price of modern automatic watches, a few sacrifices are necessary.

The Bottom Line

The Timex M79 Batman Automatic Watch comes pre-fitted with a 4-link steel band. The band is made from tiny links, so it sits smoothly without suffocating the wrist. All things considered, this is an amazing automatic watch with enticing features. The design looks gorgeous, and the movement is smooth.
