Officine Panerai has always been a constant supplier of quality timepieces and in all probability they will for a very long time to come. This year specifically they introduced their rabid fan base to a brand spanking new chronograph of only the most exceptional quality. The Radiomir 1940 Chronograph Platino comes in platinum and displays a unique and flashy design involving both modern technology and Panerai’s undeniable history.
The new Radiomir’s caseis 45 mm in diameter and possesses the wonderfully simplistic line design that were originally created by Panerai sometime around 1940. This was a time in Panerai’s history when the classic Radiomir cushion case with the wire loop strap attachment first began to develop the much larger proportions of the Lumior 1950 casing.
This case (the 1940 one) is stylishly polished with a gorgeous finish. The case also contains the two push-buttons that manages the regular chronograph functions, the bezel and the winding crown. The bezel itself frames a crystal made from Plexiglas, a special material very similar to the material Panerai used in their original Royal Italian Navy watch models. As they always tend to do, Panerai has made sure that their legacy is present both in the function and style of this watch.
What about the dial? The dial of this new chronograph is especially designed and is unique to this watch model itself. This original design of the dial is inspired by the brand itself and more so its unique functionality. The platinum version of the watch actually comes with an ivory dial and simplistic baton/dot hour markers. This platinum version of the watch also has a sandwich structured dial which is formed by a pair of superimposed plates with Panerai’s world famous luminous material between which is visible through holes that correspond to both the hour markers and the tachymeter scale.
Movement of the new Radiomir 1940 is the OP XXV caliber which has been developed on a Minerva 13-22 base. This Minerva manufacturer has had historically significant links with Officine Panerai since the 1920’s when the Swiss manufacturer worked as supplier to the Italian watch company.
As are all of Panerai’s timepieces, this Radiomir is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 50 metres but the manufacturer still recommends you have it serviced by any of a number of Authorized Panerai Service Centres. More so, if you are frequently using your new Radiomir in underwater activity, it should be instead inspected and serviced by the aforementioned service centre once a year.
The platinum variation of the Radiomir 1940 Chronograph Platino had a run of only 50 copies and it comes supplied with an official Panerai alligator watch strap.
