If you’re the owner of a beautiful military (one piece style) watch strap, there are a few important things you’ll need to learn before wearing it. The first should be its history and what it stands for. If you’ve already purchased the strap, it’s likely that you already know this. The second thing you need to know is how to change a military watch strap. Otherwise, unless you want to wear the same strap forever, you’ll be making quite a lot of trips to the jeweler. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know so you can easily change it yourself.
To put on and change a one-piece military watch strap, you start by taking the leather watch strap and pulling it over the 12 o’clock bar. Then, you will need to slide it underneath the face of the watch and bring it back up and over the 6 o’clock bar. Tighten it a little bit to make sure everything is secure and then continue by putting it onto your wrist.
To affix the watch to your wrist, flip your wrist over and treat it like a normal watch strap. Put the longer strap through the buckle on the other side and cinch the watch strap down using the tongue of the buckle, then tighten it on your wrist accordingly. Put the end of the leather through both pieces of hardware and if the access material is too long, you can bring it back into itself to tighten accordingly.
Whenever you want to change the strap, you can take your current one off in reverse order and add a new one. One-piece military watch straps are very straightforward to change and once you get the hang of it, you can easily do this in a few minutes.
To change a two-piece military watch strap, you’re going to need a few tools to access the spring bars. This takes a little more patience than changing a one-piece military watch strap, but it can be done with a spring bar tool. Lay the watch flat and grip it. Using your dominant hand, slip the spring bar tool between the strap and the lug then pull it toward yourself. This will release the spring bar from the case so you can remove it from the watch itself. Slip the spring bar out of the strap and replace it with your new strap. Then, simply affix the spring bar back into place using the tool and a little pressure. If you’re not comfortable doing this on your own, take it into the jeweler. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when handling expensive watches.
