Grand Seiko SBGK005 Watch Review

Grand Seiko SBGK005 Watch Review

The Grand Seiko SBGK005 may not look groundbreaking on a spec sheet, but it delivers something different on the wrist that the watch community has not felt before, quite like this.

The watch is, at its heart, a hand-wound dress watch, but its unusual case design, original dial, and attention to detail that drive it into its own class. The Grand Seiko SBGK005 is one of four new additions to the Grand Seiko Elegance Series launched as the so-called "Slim Hand-Wound." Let’s take a look.

The Powerful Movement

The 9S63 is Grand Seiko's newest manual-winding caliber in the last eight years. It's not Grand Seiko's new generation of movement; instead, it expands on the 9S64's well-established structure, a tried and powerful Grand Seiko caliber.

This includes a minor complication of seconds at 9 o'clock and an indication of power reserve at 3 (the horizontal placement of these two tasks combined provides the right balance on the dial). The motion has a power reserve of 72 hours on a maximum wind, and the precision is measured at+ 5/-3 seconds a day. It also has 33 jewels and 28,800 vph beat frequency.

The Case

What the watch lovers' community like about these watches is the way the new case maximizes the thinness of the mechanism.

The stainless steel case comes in at 39 mm across and 11.6 mm thick on a spec sheet, with a round hole for the gorgeous dial. When you get the watch in your own hands, it feels like a disservice to name it "round".

The short lugs flow seamlessly from the bottom of the dial and curve down to meet the wrist. This flow of lugs makes the watch feel more like a tonneau. The lugs themselves are gorgeous and eye-catching and serve as a counterpoint to the kind of bulbous mid-case shape.

The mid-case is quite thin, and the watches fit on the wrist much smaller than their width implies. It's Grand Seiko at its finest as far as the finishing is concerned. The polishing is excellent, the brushing is nuanced, and there is no flaw in the places where the two intersect. It stays true to all four versions.

The Dial

The dial for Seiko SBGK005 not lacquered, but it is finished in the same complex design imitating Mt. Iwate's texture. How the dial captures, the light lifts the entire dial and its looks to new heights.

The dial is one of the SBGK005's real stars. Grand Seiko named the dial "Mt. Iwate" after the massive volcano that sits near the Morioka watchmaking plant of the firm. It would be characterized as a mix of rough grain treatment and a sunburst finish.

The Strap

The watch comes with a blue crocodile strap, which offers a sharp contrast to your casual wear. However, the watch is also tailored to fit perfectly with any strap from the market.

The Price

The MSRP is set at $7,400USD, and this makes the SBGK005 one of the Elegance Collection's most expensive watches, as well as one of the most valued non-precious metal watches in the core collection of Grand Seiko.
