3. The 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa: $27.5 Million
Ferrari has always been a name associated with wealth, class and success, so it comes as little surprise that one of their creations sits proudly here in the top three. The Test Rossa was originally designed as a little speedster one destined to tear up any racetrack it laid its tires on. Once the rich caught wind of this little beaut coming down the line they pounced all over it, establishing this car as the ultimate display of sporting luxury. To many car fans worldwide, the Testa Rossa is the embodiment of the moment when a generation of famous sports cars crossed over into being favored playthings for the wealthy. This is Ferrari’s ultimate rare vintage due to its dominant streak when performing in any race its allowed to enter. It was unstoppable in the 1950’s and won both the Le Mans and the World Sports Car Championships. If you’re a Ferrari fanatic, this should be your dream car.
2. 1954 Mercedes W196R: $29,601,500
Let me precursor anything else I say about this vehicle with the fact that there are only ten in existence, which makes the “Silver Arrow”,, as this car is affectionately known as, exceedingly rare. Coming up second in a list like this isn’t something to be down about, as 99.9999% of humanity will never even lay eyes upon this elite Mercedes. In fact, only one of these cars is actually privately owned, as the other nine are either owned by Mercedes-Benz itself or a handful of very lucky auto museums. The car itself is a single-seater and provides its driver with a very unique driver v. road experience, one that very few other cars can offer. In the 1954 and 1955 Formula 1 racing season this car crushed all of its competition and, interestingly, it was that singular car that won all of those races that is the only privately-owned model of this car. Some unnamed business tycoon has it locked up somewhere. Nothing says luxury like owning a one-of-a-kind car.
1. 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic: $40 Million
The 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic is the most expensive vehicle in history for a few very very good reasons. First off, there were initially only 4 manufactured, and somewhat upsetting is the fact that only two of them actually still survive to this day and are both owned by very wealthy connoisseurs. The car’s design is rooted in various futuristic elements from the 1930’s and is made out of Elektron (a magnesium alloy) and Duralumin (an aluminum alloy). Interesting futuristic design? Check. Insane rarity? Check. A construction technique used once and never again? Check. This car is the epitome of everything you could want in a vintage luxury vehicle.
